- The premise of the episode is loosely based on John Hughes' Home Alone films. The ending where Stewie is reunited with his family has the same feel as the ending of the first Home Alone, and uses John Williams' original score.
- Peter and Lois get into a fight when Peter spends the Griffins' train ticket money on helium-filled shower curtain rings. Peter's ensuing monologue and background music is almost a verbatim transcript of John Candy's from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, replacing "wife" with "kids" and "customers" with "friends." His character, Del Griffith's career in the film is also to sell shower curtain rings.
- Don Knotts stars in Operation Dumbo Sex concerning the impregnation of an elephant. The title is a parody of the Disney film Operation Dumbo Drop.
- When Lois tells Peter to do the opposite of what is his natural instinct it is similar to the sitcom Seinfeld called "The Opposite" when George Costanza tries to do the same thing.
- The cutaway featuring Fozzie Bear is based on his introduction scene in The Muppet Movie, where he is performing stand-up in a bar and sets up a joke similar to the one in the cutaway.[1]
- Peter is on the phone with Doc Brown, who tells him that it is 8:25, and Peter is late for school. Peter then skateboards behind cars while Huey Lewis and the News' "The Power of Love" plays. This is from Back to the Future.
- Peter is being massaged by Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze's characters. His skin is in the shape of clay on a ceramics wheel. "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers in playing. This is from the 1990 film Ghost.
- When Joe is polishing his wheelchair he recites part of My Rifle; The Creed of a United States Marine, used in Full Metal Jacket, inserting wheelchair for rifle.
- Peter saying that nothing bad happens to space shuttles is a reference to the Space Shuttle Challenger and Columbia disasters, which involves said space shuttles disintegrating mid flight and killing every member of the crew.
