- Numerous plot-points are derived from Back to the Future. The time travel is animated to resemble Quantum Leap.
- This episode makes use of the “sensitive dependence on initial conditions” concept of chaos theory, otherwise known as the “butterfly effect,” an idea first described by Jacques Hadamard and popularized by Pierre Duhem and Edward Lorenza.
- The scene where Peter and Brian encounter Lois at the pool parodies a similar scene in Caddyshack.
- Quagmire references the entrance to the Hogwarts Express on platform 9 3/4 from Harry Potter when telling the guys about the fourth hole that women allegedly have, noting that while it can't be seen, you have to believe it is there.
- As Death escorts Peter and Brian back to the present, he turns to Molly Ringwald and says, "I'll be back later for your career." In the mid-1990s, Ringwald's popularity plummeted dramatically.
- Peter recalls an episode of The Twilight Zone in which "the woman wakes up in the hospital and all the doctors are pigs." The episode he refers to is "The Eye of the Beholder".
- In the altered present, Dick Cheney had accidentally shot Justice Scalia, Karl Rove, and Tucker Carlson. This is a reference to the Dick Cheney hunting incident.
- Roger from American Dad! appears at the very end of the episode. His sole line from the episode is a reference to the first episode of American Dad!, where he asks Francine Smith about Pecan Sandies.
