Theodore Roosevelt (born October 27, 1858, Gramercy, New York City - died January 6, 1919, Oyster Bay, New York) was the 26th president of the United States, in office from 1901-1909. He became president after the assassination of William McKinley whose Vice President he was. He was a Republican and a graduate of Harvard University, where he studied biology.
Roosevelt was noted for his energetic personality and forceful style of government. He believed in Progressivism, a doctrine that called for the use science, technology, engineering and the "new social sciences" to determine and solve American problems. His influence spurred the development of the Panama Canal and the development of a strong U.S. Navy. Roosevelt also received the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War.
Roosevelt led an active life, participating in boxing, horseback riding, tennis, rowing and a variety of other sports. He was married twice: the first time in 1880 to Alice Hathaway Lee and in 1886 to Edith Carow. He was the father of six children.
