Top Gun is a 1986 film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer in association with Paramount Pictures.

The film stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer and Tom Skerritt. Cruise plays LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young Naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He is given the chance to train with his RIO (Radar Intercept Officer - the "back seater" in the two-man F-14 Tomcat), named LTJG Nick "Goose" Bradshaw at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, after the pilot above him in squadron rankings resigns. The film depicts his progress through the training, his romance with an instructor, and his overcoming a crisis of confidence following a fatal training accident.

Peter Griffin imagines himself in the role of Maverick Mitchell when he thinks about loading up his pick up truck with aviation fuel in "Airport '07". The scene also features music similar to that used in the film.

In "Road to Germany", when Brian, Stewie, and Mort are first shown in the Avro Lancaster, a British quad engined bomber, Stewie says to Brian, "Talk to me Goose," referring to Bradshaw in the film. Brian showed displeasure when he was called by the name.

When the plane that Quagmire is piloting takes off in "Halloween on Spooner Street", the music played is a Japanese rendition of the theme from Top Gun.

In "Mr. and Mrs. Stewie", Stewie notes that he may have finally found a soul-mate in Penelope and wonders if this is how Maverick felt when he met Goose. A cutaway replays a scene from the film, with Maverick pushing Tom Cruise's Scientology beliefs which Goose declines.

When Chris and Pam admit to each other that they are inexperienced at sex in "Baby Got Black", Chris considers that even Maverick from Top Gun must have been inexperienced once. A cutaway shows Tom Cruise as Maverick at a "glory hole" thanking the "pretty lady" on the other side and winking at the camera.

In "Nanny Goats", Chris watches Top Gun featuring only public domain music.

Two songs from the soundtrack by Kenny Loggins are featured in "Veteran Guy", "Danger Zone" and "Playing With the Boys".

During a supercut of short-arm gags in "Meg's Wedding", Peter plays volleyball with Goose in a parody of Top Gun.
